The many ways “green buildings” save

Rachel Layne of CBS News reviews how 40% of the world’s carbon emissions comes from buildings and discusses how the building industry is promoting new energy-efficiency standards to address this problem.

Buildings must meet certain standards for water usage, electricity consumption, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) in order to be considered “green,” or energy efficient and sustainable. Developers and property owners invest in these areas because green buildings have many payoffs besides a smaller environmental footprint: these benefits include decreased operation costs, higher standard of living for those who live or work in such buildings, and higher ROI. So, as green building standards become more valuable, developers and owners will continue seeking new solutions to fit them.
